Adhesives used by Jacobs Joinery

Jacobs Joinery use a range of adhesives, each being the most appropriate for the materials being bonded and the environment in which the finished object will be placed.

PVA - Polyvinyl Acetate is a water-based adhesive which can be applied by hand or roller and dries colourless. It is used in woodworking, wood flooring and face lamination.

Contact Adhesives are used in strong bonds with high shear-resistance like laminates, such as bonding Formica to a wooden counter.

Contact adhesives are applied to both surfaces and allowed some time to dry before the two surfaces are pushed together. Once the surfaces are pushed together, the bond forms very quickly. It is usually not necessary to apply pressure for a long time, so there is less need for clamps.

Epoxy Resins normally consist of a resin and hardener, each of which are stable on their own but when mixed react to form a solid which forms a very strong bond.

Epoxy adhesives are a major part of the class of adhesives called "structural adhesives" or "engineering adhesives" These high-performance adhesives are used in the construction of aircraft, automobiles, bicycles, boats, golf clubs, skis, snowboards, and other applications where high strength bonds are required. Epoxy adhesives can be developed to suit almost any application. They can be used as adhesives for wood, metal, glass, stone, and some plastics.

Epoxy adhesives are better in heat and chemical resistance than other common adhesives. In general, epoxy adhesives cured with heat will be more heat- and chemical-resistant than those cured at room temperature.

Cascamite is a very well respected adhesive in the trade, especially formulated for exterior joinery that will be exposed to the weather. A synthetic resin, it is waterproof when dry. It is sold as a powder which is mixed with water before use. It has good gap filling properties, suitable for load bearing and laminating. Leaves a clear glue line and will not discolour hardwood, mould resistant. Tack time 1-2 hours cure time 6 hours (temperature dependent)

It is an excellent, well proven adhesive for joinery, cabinet work or boat building.

Jacobs Joinery started manufacturing in late February 1997 on behalf of Jacobs Construction but were soon being asked to provide quotations for the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke joinery, predominantly to commercial markets, mainly to architects drawings and specifications.
